Bradley Manning Gets Moved to Fort Leavenworth – Cartoon

[UPDATE Below – President Obama speaks on Manning and the rule of law]

MacLeod Cartoons:

Glenn Greenwald details the important role of the blogosphere in getting Manning’s case enough attention. I just hope that Leavenworth, and ‘access to other inmates’, doesn’t lead to a worse situation for PFC Manning.

[UPDATE :: Sunday, April 24, 2011]

Glenn Greenwald has an extremely good article, President Obama speaks on Manning and the rule of law

Here is an excerpt that I think just about says it all:

That Obama has to resort to the most brazen hypocrisy and factually confused claims to defend Manning’s treatment should hardly be surprising (and as Politico‘s quoted experts noted, Obama was also deeply confused when he claimed yesterday that he, too, would be breaking the law if he released unauthorized classified information, since the President has the unfettered right to declassify what he wants). Those engaged in purely unjustifiable conduct can, by definition, find only incoherent and nonsensical rationale to justify what they’re doing. The President’s remarks yesterday (April 22, 2011) provide a classic case of how true that is.

Ralph Nader and Russian Roulette

Democracy Now’s Juan Gonzales interview today, Friday, March 18, 2011:

“Why are We Playing Russian Roulette with the American People?”: Longtime Nuclear Critic Ralph Nader Advocates Phasing Out Nuclear Power Industry

RALPH NADER: The Japanese disaster has ended whatever nuclear renaissance is being considered here in the United States. The problem is that people have got to get more involved, because the government and the industry will defend nuclear power in the United States to the last mutation. They are representing a closed, monetized mind that does not have options for revision, which true science should provide for. Secretary Chu, Energy Secretary, has refused for two years to meet with the leading critics of nuclear power, such as the Union of Concerned Scientists, Friends of the Earth and other groups. He has met with nuclear business interests regularly, and he has written articles touting nuclear power.

What we’re seeing here is 110 or so operating nuclear plants in the United States, many of them aging, many of them infected with corrosion, faulty pipes, leaky pumps and combustible materials. These have been documented by data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission assembled by the Union of Concerned Scientists. Indian Point, for example, is a plant that presents undue risks, in the opinion of the Union of Concerned Scientists, to millions of people in the New York City greater area. And it is unevacuable if there’s an accident. You’re never going to evacuate a population of millions of people, whether it’s around San Onofre or Diablo Canyon in Southern California or Indian Point or Davis-Besse near Toledo and Detroit or any of the other endangered nuclear plants.

Why are we playing Russian roulette with the American people for nuclear plants whose principal objective is simply to boil water and produce steam? This is technological insanity. It presents national security problems, for every nuclear plant is a prime target. It affects our civil liberties. It endangers our workers. It is an industry that cannot be financed by Wall Street because it’s too risky. Wall Street demands 100 percent taxpayer guarantees for any nuclear plant.

So I suggest that people listening and watching this program to pick up the phone and dial the White House comment number, which is (202) 456-1111, (202) 456-1111, and demand the following: that there be public hearings in every area where there’s a nuclear plant, so the people can see for themselves what the hazards are, what the risks are, how farcical the evacuation plans are, how costly nuclear power is, and how it can be replaced by energy efficiency, by solar energy, different kinds of solar energy, by cogeneration, as Amory Lovins and many others, Peter Bradford, have pointed out.

We must no longer license any new nuclear plants. We should shut down the ones like Indian Point. How many people know that Hillary Clinton, as senator, and Andrew Cuomo, as attorney general, demanded that Indian Point be shut down? That doesn’t matter to the monetized minds in Washington, D.C. We also should prepare a plan where, apart from the aging plants, which should be shut down, and apart from the earthquake-risk plants—should be shut down—for the phase-out of the entire industry. We’re going to be left with radioactive waste for hundreds of thousands of years, for which there is no permanent repository. This is institutional insanity, and I urge the people in this country to wake up before they experience what is now going on in northern Japan: uninhabitable territory, thousands dead, hundreds of thousands at risk of cancer, enormous economic loss. And for what?

This is a post by Digby posted here in it’s entirety. In view of the latest “As It Stands” Times-Standard opinionated article on this subject we wanted to add Digby’s thoughts to the discussion.

The Suggestibility Of Bradley Manning

by digby

I haven’t written much about Bradley Manning’s treatment in his military brig, since Greenwald has done a great job along with many others who are following the story carefully. There seems to be a lot of controversy over whether or not he is being tortured. In my opinion, locking up someone who has not presented any kind of threat to other prisoners and who has not been convicted of a crime for months on end in solitary confinement under tight restrictions is torture. It’s horrible enough to do it someone who has been convicted, but using these techniques on someone you are trying to get to testify against someone else cannot be seen in any other light.

As we well know by now, the line between interrogation and torture has become indistinguishable among far too many people and many of these more suspect interrogation techniques are likely to produce the same kind of false information you get from torture. So one aspect of the Manning story stuck out at me as being pretty damning evidence and that’s the fact that he’s being awakened every five minutes during the day and if the guards “need” to assure themselves that he’s ok, they wake him up at night. Keep in mind that this is a guy who’s completely isolated and has no access to anything unauthorized, not even a real blanket and pillow. (Apparently, he’s got some strange device that makes him miserable.)

Sleep deprivation is well known to enhance “suggestibility” and is commonly used in interrogations:

A person’s suggestibility is how willing they are to accept and act on suggestions by others. Interrogators seek to increase a subject’s suggestibility. Methods used to increase suggestibility may include moderate sleep deprivation, exposure to constant white noise, and using GABAergic drugs such as sodium amytal or sodium thiopental.

There’s no evidence that they are using white noise or the drugs mentioned, but it sure sounds as if they employing moderate sleep deprivation to increase “suggestibility.” And we know what they are suggesting, don’t we?

Months and months of sleep deprivation and isolation cannot be justified for security reasons. This fellow isn’t a commando. He isn’t a professional spy. He’s just some grunt who uploaded some electronic files. The only reasonable explanation for his treatment is that they are trying to get him to implicate someone else in his alleged a crime. And that’s the oldest reason for torture in the books. In the old days, they wanted their subjects to implicate Satan. Today it’s Julian Assange.

What is going on here is truly an assault on this nations’ manhood and womanhood.

Better Than A Bomb

[UPDATE Below – “Pig in a Poke”]

From the moment the first plane hit the twin towers this country has self-destructed. Just look at what the latest blue-ribbon fiasco has produced. Let start with Charles Krauthammer’s slide into a black hole: How to modernize Miranda for the Age of Terror – Op-Ed column for the Washington Post newspaper.

Then you have the latest fiasco attempt to bomb New York Times Square and Joe Lieberman’s end around Constitutional Law with his Citizenship stripping bill reported in the Washington Post. Here’s some more on this: Lieberman’s Citizenship-Revoking Law Slammed As ‘Draconian’ in the Huffington Post.

Another similar situation after the Fort Hood shooting: Army: Fort Hood Gunman in Custody After 12 Killed, 31 Injured in Rampage by Fox News. He’s linked to an  Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar, another “radical” and President Obama issues an order for his shoot on sight summary execution. Reuters reports:  U.S. targets Americanborn cleric in Yemen: officials as some sort of “America’s top terrorist threat.”

This commentary is typical and growing: “Staggering Hypocrisy.”

Then you Arizona’s new laws assaulting and criminalizing ethnic minorities, non-whites and indigenous peoples. And the internal isolation that goes along with the growing boycott.  Now a new law: In Arizona, just say no to Latino heritage     -“It’s really about fear and denial.”

The world is fast learning that America, a country ruled by Law is a joke. The literal physical lives of American civilians killed by terrorist bombs, bad as that was, is totally insignificant to what these paranoid Dark Age government officials have done, continue to do and promise to do to America’s legitimate right to exist as a constitutional country. The bleeding of America’s Essence has already won them the War.

America’s enemies are not some “rag heads” holed up in a cave or some mud out in some barren desert hut with an AK47 or an equivalent stone-age club. America’s enemies our their corrupt elected leaders. The betrayers, the complicit, the enablers, the corrupt, the gutless, the arrogant, the morons and that list goes on.

If you want real proof from an outside source substantiating the above observations and conclusions, read (below) “The President of Cant.”

HOPE – An Immoral Dead-End

with one comment

In my lifetime I was often told: “Talk is cheap.” It’s what you do that tells the truth. For whatever reasons, American’s bought into that cheap suit, “Hope.” Tariq Ali lays out a rather stark assessment of President Obama’s agenda.

If there was ever something to put on this blog worth reading, it is this:

PRESIDENT OF CANT by tariq ali

A year since the White House changed hands, how has the American empire altered? Under the Bush Administration it was widely believed, in both mainstream opinion and much of the amnesiac section of the left, that the United States had fallen under an aberrant regime, the product of a virtual coup d’état by a coterie of right-wing fanatics—alternatively, ultra-reactionary corporations—who had hijacked American democracy for policies of unprecedented aggression in the Middle East. In reaction, the election to the Presidency of a mixed-race Democrat, vowing to heal America’s wounds at home and restore its reputation abroad, was greeted with a wave of ideological euphoria not seen since the days of Kennedy. Once again, America could show its true face—purposeful but peaceful, firm but generous; humane, respectful, multi-cultural—to the world. Naturally, with the makings of a Lincoln or a Roosevelt for our time in him, the country’s new young ruler would have to make compromises, as any statesman must. But at least the shameful interlude of Republican swagger and criminality was over. Bush and Cheney had broken the continuity of a multilateral American leadership that had served the country well throughout the Cold War and after. Obama would now restore it.

Rarely has self-interested mythology—or well-meaning gullibility—been more quickly exposed. There was no fundamental break in foreign policy, as opposed to diplomatic mood music, between the Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2 Administrations; there has been none between the Bush and Obama regimes. The strategic goals and imperatives of the us imperium remain the same, as do its principal theatres and means of operation. Since the collapse of the ussr, the Carter Doctrine—the construction of another democratic pillar of human rights—has defined the greater Middle East as the central battlefield for the imposition of American power around the world. It is enough to look at each of its sectors to see that Obama is the offspring of Bush, as Bush was of Clinton and Clinton of Bush the father, as so many appropriately biblical begettings. forced_treatment_buttonC. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

In the last 100 years there have been several significant non-scientific, non-humanitarian, ultimately evil attempts by certain egocentric groups to control life and death according to the beliefs of these groups, often supported by the government!

EUGENICS

“Eugenics was practiced around the world and was promoted by governments, and influential individuals and institutions. Its advocates regarded it as a social philosophy for the improvement of human hereditary traits through the promotion of higher reproduction of certain people and traits, and the reduction of reproduction of certain people and traits.[6] Today some regard it as a brutal movement which inflicted massive human rights violations on millions of people.[7] The “interventions” advocated and practiced by eugenicists involved prominently the identification and classification of individuals and their families, including the poor, mentally ill, blind, ‘promiscuous women’, homosexuals and entire “racial” groups–such as the Roma and Jews–as “degenerate” or “unfit”; the segregation or institutionalization of such individuals and groups, their sterilization, their “euthanasia”, and in the worst case of Nazi Germany, their mass extermination.[8] The practices engaged in by eugenicists involving violations of privacy, attacks on reputation, violations of the right to life, to found a family, to discrimination are all today classified as violations of human rights.

The modern field and term were first formulated by Sir Francis Galton in 1883,[10] drawing on the recent work of his cousin Charles Darwin. From its inception eugenics was supported by prominent people, including Margaret Sanger, Marie Stopes, H. G. Wells, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Emile Zola, George Bernard Shaw, John Maynard Keynes, William Keith Kellogg, Winston Churchill, Linus Pauling[11] and Sidney Webb.[12][13][14] Its most infamous proponent and practitioner was however Adolf Hitler

THE ABOVE WAS TAKEN FROM Wikipedia, with some spellings corrected!

TUSKEEGE SYPHILLIS EXPERIMENT

“For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all.

“The United States government did something that was wrong-deeply, profoundly, morally wrong. It was an outrage to our commitment to integrity and equality for all our citizens. . . . clearly racist.”

-President Clinton’s apology for the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment to the eight remaining survivors, May 16, 1997.

LOBOTOMY

“Scheflin and Opton in The Mind Manipulators state that 100,000 people received lobotomies between 1946-1955, with half of the operations occurring in the U.S.

The lobotomy victim’s “sacrifice” was substantial. Psychiatrists Franz Alexander and Sheldon Selesnick noted that through psychosurgery:

“an area essential to the human being – his personality – is forever destroyed”.

“Psychiatry’s only and entire approach has been the application of force to a human being, whether this force be physical (involuntary commitment, straight jackets, restraints, abuse, torture, brain surgery), electrical (ECT, shock treatments), or biochemical (drugs). The aim is always to alter behavior, forcibly, with no appeal to the person themselves – their mind, thoughts, feelings, hopes, dreams, goals, intentions, responsibility or desires are ignored and even largely denied by modern psychiatric theories and methods.”

PSYCHIATRY

With the assistance of schools psychiatrists and physicians are insisting that a remarkably high percentage of young children be placed on drugs that alter their brain and personality, sometimes for life.

STATIN DRUGS

Huge numbers of Americans are bulldozed by arrogant physicians into taking statin drugs, threatened often with tales of doom. I have seen scores of individuals who have developed severe peripheral neuropathy (their physicians refused to admit that it could be due to statins), muscle pain and weakness and memory loss. There are many safe alternatives to controlling cholesterol problems but the overwhelming percentage of physicians criticize and intimidate patients who do not wish to take statins.

CHEMOTHERAPY

Patients with cancer are urged to have chemotherapy and given stern warnings of death without them. Despite this, to take just one example, malignant brain tumors, there is no published evidence that chemotherapy prolongs life. Indeed one overview states that for cancer in general the prolongation of life is an average of 4 months! Hodgkin’s is one of the few exceptions. Radiation does prolong life in many situations..

The reason for this brief overview of Medical Tyranny is a recent case in Minneapolis, that of Daniel Hauser, which has engendered national attention. Physicians have determined that THEY are the complete and final judges and ultimately prosecutors, with the power of the local prosecutor and a judge to force treatment on a 13 year old boy who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The mother has taken the boy away and is the subject of a nationwide witch hunt to imprison her and force the boy to have chemotherapy, despite the objections of the parents and the boy. The question is NOT whether the therapy has a high likelihood of success. Medical literature supports their claim of a 90% likelihood of success although there is also at least as good evidence that it is only about 82%–still better than with any other malignancy.

For each of the following factors, the prognosis is reduced by 7%

Age >= 45 years

Stage IV disease

Hemoglobin < 10.5 g/dl

Lymphocyte count < 600/µl or < 8%

Male

Albumin < 4.0 g/dl

White blood count >= 15,000/µl

Of course the boy is male so we can assume that his prognosis is at best 75 to 83%, NOT 90% as claimed by the Medical Tyrranists. Further there are serious COMPLICATIONS of chemotherapy

Death from the treatment—2-3%

Significant other tumors later in life

Sterility

Significant increase in early cardiovascular disease

What is the true lifelong cure rate? This is no more known than the cure rate with alternatives. The THEY who consider themselves GOD in making the demands for chemotherapy even state that the survival rate without chemotherapy is 5%. I suspect that it is far higher when appropriate alternatives are used. And most of them are safe! For instance:

Intravenous high dose vitamin C-up to 100 grams daily. I have seen tumors the size of an orange disappear within 2 weeks

Vitamin D 3 in adequate doses prevents about 90% of all cancers.

There is good evidence for remission of some cancers with D3 therapy

Colloidal silver may be of benefit, even intravenously

Insulin potentiated chemotherapy. Minute dosages of

chemotherapy work just as well, when potentiated by lowering blood sugar with insulin. Far less dangerous!

Spiritual healing sometimes leads to miraculous healing.

Far beyond the medical statistics is ultimately legality and moral/ethical issues. Parents are responsible for the welfare of their children. Under what Constitutional law is it proper to FORCE treatment against the will of the parents and child? A 12 year old in most religions is considered mature enough to become confirmed. To me and many ethicists and spiritual authorities, forcing treatment is just another example of Medical Tyranny! The current Tyrannists do NOT have the 100% certainty they imply as their right to force therapy!
